When to Wear Cufflinks

Many people wonder about when to wear cufflinks and the history behind this accessory. In the 1600s fashion moved forward with the invention of the cufflink. Prior to this time, an item called cuff strings closed the cuffs of blouses. No one is exactly sure who invented cufflinks, but King Charles II wore them regularly and influenced the public with this new fashion accessory. Men commonly wore cufflinks until the middle of the 19th century when cuff buttons became more commonplace.
What type of shirt to wear with cufflinks
Wear cufflinks with shirts that have French cuffs. These cuffs, which are also commonly called Musketeer or double cuffs, have buttonholes but they do not have buttons. Avoid wearing cufflinks with shirts that have buttons. This goes against proper cufflink etiquette.
Formal cufflinks
Choose subtle stones or metals for cufflinks for important business meetings, formal dinners or other occasions where it is important to have a conservative look. There are many popular name brands that make cufflinks, such as Mont Blanc.
Cufflinks for fun
In recent years, the cufflink has become an accessory worn nearly everywhere. You commonly see men wear shirts with French cuffs with jeans or a casual sport jacket. If you are wearing cufflinks in this way, exercise creativity in your choice of links. There are many great styles including patterns, sports teams, animals and unusual shapes and designs. Cufflinks make a great gift for weddings, birthdays or other holidays.
Do not be afraid to wear cufflinks. They are an important accessory for men or women and look great no matter what the occasion.
