How to Clean Cufflinks

One of the challenges of being a well-dressed businessman is knowing how to clean cufflinks. Cufflinks easily get dirty since they rub across your desk all day and end up in all sorts of dirt. Unfortunately, it is hard to notice the dirt on them until they get really soiled. Cleaning your cufflinks is not hard, but it does require a little know-how in order to avoid breaking or scuffing them. Use this guide to help you with this task.

  1. First: Use a good jewlery cleaner

Many cufflinks are made from precious metal and have embedded stones and gems, especially Invicta and Mont Blanc links. For these, be sure to use a good jewelry cleaner that is readily available at your local jewelry store or online. Rub the links with a soft cloth. Avoid using any type of brush or bleaching agent.

  2. Second: Use soap and water

If your cufflinks are not made with precious metals and are worth less than one hundred dollars or so, skip the jewelry cleaner and use a mild soap and water. Dilute liquid dish detergent with water and use an old cloth to wipe the links. If there is ground-in grime, try soaking the links in water first to loosen it.

  3. Third: Rinse, dry and polish

After cleaning your links with a jewelry cleaner or with soap and water, there are several additional steps to take to ensure that they look their best. Rinse them well and dry them with a soft cloth. Next, use a metal polish to add some shine. This also protects them from accumulating additional grime. Now even your diamond links can sparkle again!
